I had the pleasure of working with a mom who was not breastfeeding her
baby(born Dec.24) due to misinformation from the physician. She told me that
he had said she couldn't breastfeed because she has Hepatitis C (from a
transfusion, no other risk factors). When I gave her the correct information
she was so happy. She was still leaking milk and went home and within one week
was breastfeeding this baby 50% of the time. Now she is breastfeeding 90% of
the time and is going to begin expressing so that she can return to work.
This baby was so uncomfortable on ABM. He is Inuit(Eskimo) and one the whole
cow's milk is not tolerated by them. He had a severe case of facial eczema for
which he was receiving a steroid cream daily and he was not sleeping well due
to GI discomfort. After one week of relactation the eczema was nearly gone and
his GI symptoms had decreased substantially. This mom was so proud of herself
for having relactated when she saw the positive changes in her baby. It was
confirmation for her that her baby needed her and the milk she had to offer.
Her self-esteem went WAY UP!
What I was amazed at was how easy it was for her to relactate without the use
of SNS or any other aids. It was so amazing to see him at the breast, even
after six weeks of artificial nipples he knew what to do!
Hope this warms you all and lifts you out of the despair of frustration that
can seem overwhelming in this business.
Sincerely,
Nola
