How old is the toddler you are talking about? I have some experience in
this area. My middle child would wake up every one to two hours to
breastfeed at night. Sometimes more often. He was a light sleeper
and anything would wake him. It was so bad we couldn't use the family bed
in it's traditional sense because everytime my husband would move Jeremy
would wake to nurse. I moved into his room and slept in his bed with him.
I felt tortured! When he was between 18-20 months of age I decided to wean
him at night. For some time I would point out the window at night and say
"look it is dark, it is night time, it is time
to sleep" and we would breastfeed throughout the night. In the
morning I would point out the window and say, "look it is light out
and time to wake up" When he was able to show me night and day
(within a couple of months) and tell me what we do. I told him
mommy's breast doesn't work at night, it needs to sleep, but when we wake
up in the day, it will work again. I had to repeat that several times
throughout the night for a few nights, but then he just slept. I also gave
him an alternative to breastfeeding, which was he could hold my breast at
night and he did until he weaned at three years. Jeremy is now almost nine
years old and still looks at my breast lovingly.
