Response to:Susan Nachman-Srebmik who had question about e-coli in urine
infection in 4-month old-
As far as I know, e-coli is a fairly common organism to cause urinary tract
infections in little girls-The digestive tract normally has e-coli in it, I
would assume it is present in BF infants as well as any receiving ABM or
solids. Anyway, that's why your mom (or someone else) taught you to wipe from
front to back. New mothers should be taught that it is very important to
clean their baby girls' diaper area from front to back to avoid spreading
fecal organisms to the urethra ( which is short in females). They also should
be told to clean thoroughly but GENTLY around the urethral area, as an
irritated urethra carries organisms more readily up into the bladder. Though
BF will protect the gut from an OVERGROWTH of certain organisms, it would
seem very difficult for it to successfully attack a colony of e-coli in the
urine. This info should stop her blaming BF for failure.
