Hello there. I have been checking into what medicaid covers as far as
breastfeeding goes. I called them twice and received conflicting
information. The first time that I called, I was told that medicaid would
cover an electric pump if it is a medical necessity. The second time that I
called, I was told that medicaid would cover a manual pump if it is a
medical necessity. She told me that it would have to be preapproved. A
doctor would have to fill out a form and send it in explaining why the woman
would need the pump.

If it is approved, then the woman would bring the statement from medicaid to
a supplier and receive what she needs. Can anyone tell me if they know what
the real deal is? I would also like to know if medicaid covers lactation
consultants, sns and electric pumps. The second lady that I talked with did
not seem very impressed with breastfeeding. Her explanation of medically
necessary was that if the baby had to have breastmilk due to medical
reasons. She told me that this did not include whether or not breastmilk
was better nutritionally, but medically.

Can anyone help me with this? When you work with WIC clients, alot of them
are on medicaid as well.

Thanks,
Carrie
