Kathleen -
Thank you for posting the response from the Thyroid Society. I've been
working on a LLLI help form this week from a mom who's just been diagnosed
with Grave's disease. Her physician (an internist) told her she had to wean,
that there was no safe drug to take while breastfeeding and if she continued
to bf her 3 month old that the drug would stunt his growth! He told her it
would be a three week wait to see the endocrinologist and she couldn't afford
to wait that long because she has a goiter. Aaauuuggghhhh!!!!
I've sent her quotes from Tom Hale, Ruth Lawrence and the AAP, and told her
how to contact the Center for Breastfeeding Information, but she's terrified
of hurting her baby by continuing to bf. She finally was reassured enough
that she said she would not wean completely, but just nurse him once a day
until he starts solids and then maybe she'd nurse him a little more because
he'd be bigger. We've been writing back and forth since Friday, but nothing I
say will convince her that her doctor is an idiot and she can take the PTU
while nursing. (Though of course I can't say it that way to her.)
If I may, I'll send her this last quote from the Thyroid society. One last
shot, and then I'll let go and just have to accept that nursing once a day is
better than weaning completely. Poor baby...
