A month back I wrote in about a mom who was pregnant and had surgery on one
breast leaving her with only one milk duct in that breast. Thanks for all
the info and support about successful breastfeeding with one breast.
Anyway, a week ago Monday she gave birth to a little boy. C-sect,
epidural, forceps (not that unusual for the hospital she gave birth in,
sigh!) She reported breastfeeding getting off to a good start, but, then
the bilirubin went up and phototherapy brought in. She and the baby
finally got home the following Thursday, bringing phototherapy with them.
Baby was getting supplementary bottles of sugar water and using pacifier
under the lights. Mom was putting baby to breast and pumping. This
weekend she called worried about nipple confusion. We talked for awhile,
she needs lots of emotional support (single mom at home with her mother),
baby woke up and started crying we hung-up. She called back on Monday to
report baby is off phototherapy and breastfeeding started up with a
vengence when we got off the phone. The unoperated breast seems to be
working as it should and the other breast seems to be producing a much
smaller amount of milk.
Chalk up another one for sticking it out with support.
