OK I am gonna take the bull by the horns here. I posted the word trendy
next to dairy to test the waters (or should I unmix my metaphors and say,
to wave a little red cloth...) I am wondering aloud here, OK? I don't
passionately believe that dairy allergies are over diagnosed. My best
friend is a BF Mom whose child is frighteningly allergic to dairy. I know
it's out there. But my journalistic nose still sniffs a trend. Like, nipple
shields are out, bottles are out, non-Lansinoh lubricants are out. Cup
feeding is in, finger feeding is in, Dairy Allergies are Definitely In....
Do we figures to prove we should be discussing dairy allergies with every
Mom whose baby has colic? Surely family history of allergy is important. I
agree that compared to a colicky baby, cutting dairy is minor. But it is
still a major hassle for a tired Mom. I'm particularly curious as to
whether dairy allergy is so often considered among non US IBCLCs as it is
here.
I wonder how many people, like me, are now suggesting dairy allergy as a
possibility because, well, because everyone else is. I admit, I do not know
the figures (though I am sure I am about to find out). But I am tempted to
suggest it simply because all of you are. Then co-workers hear me suggest
it and they suggest it. And hence, were I not to pull myself up short, as I
am doing today, I would be spreading the trend without really informing
myself.
Let's discuss it. Nothing personal, OK?!
