The question is, and it should be asked of the physician is "what
possible harm can there be in leaving the thing in there for a month, 8
months, or two years until the child is weaned or weans himself.  I
cannot imagine what would be the problem, but am not up on this issue.
Maybe he thinks 11 months is enough breastfeeding.  Wait, wait...
