I've wanted to comment on several points but just getting to it:

In the early 80's I worked at a hospital that had a breastfeeding
program, (This was pre-IBCLC's), the doctor who initiated the program had
flyers made to put up in the OB ward saying 'The House Formula is
Breastmilk'.

I started working in the breastfeeding field in the 70's and at the time
we were informed that anything given to a baby in hospital had to be
prescribed by the doctor including TOS (that other stuff), so I got into
the habit of telling mothers who asked me to recommend TOS, that I was
not a doctor and could not diagnose or prescribe therefore I could not
recommend a brand or kind of TOS that they would need to see their doctor
about that. I still pretty much stick to this, it gets me off the hook
so easily, although I also now tell them that I am an expert on
breastmilk and the process of breastfeeding not TOS. If, when doing a
consult I want the mother to bring TOS with her, and she asks what kind,
I tell her to bring whatever they gave her in the hospital or whatever
her doctor recommended, etc.

Shaken Milk: Again back in the 80's, I heard another Leader report that
a mother had called her and said when she shook her milk too hard that
she ended up with some solids (butter?) that clogged the holes in the
bottle. The Leader who reported this was also a scientist who I would
trust implicitly. Has anyone else ever heard of or seen this happen?
I'm 17 years post-lactation so don't have any material with which to
experiment.( ;-D )
