Dear Dr. Cordes,
The question of the father's role in breastfeeding comes up in literally
every LLL meeting! A few things that I might add to your list:
*Feeding the Mom also feeds the baby.
*Loving care and touch by the father teaches the baby that food is not
always the same as love. This idea helps mothers and fathers because so many
want Dad to be able to feed the baby as a way to "bond". We stress that
bonding is a process, not an event or even a daily series of events.
*Breastfeeding is the *only* thing in baby care that Dad can't do. In some
families, Dad does all the bathing of baby, in others Dad does all the burping
when he is home. Some Dads are wonderful at soothing a fussy baby when Mom
has done everything she can think of! Baby-wearing can be done by both
parents, too.
*Dad can create a wonderful buffer zone between Mom/Baby and well-meaning
friends and relatives. In other words, he can be the bad guy when Mom is too
exhausted to stand up for her needs and baby's needs. Is this what you meant
by "physical and emotional protection"? It does sound the same!

Best of luck with your breastfeeding classes.

Sincerely,
Lisa Jones, LLL Leader in sunny Wellington, south Florida, USA
