Carrie, This condition is treated by inserting a drainage shunt shortly
after the baby's birth which will drain fluid from the brain into the
stomach, preventing a fatal build-up of fluid. There will be a tube visible
just under the skin running down the side of the baby's head behind the ear.
The tube may bother the baby if there is a lot of pressure on it while lying
on that side for feedings. This may not concern the baby so much as a
newborn, but may be more bothersome later when baby is more aware. The
condition affects the way the brain develops, therefore benefits from human
milk are a special advantage to this baby. Even breastmilk is not a
guarantee that there will be no motor, speech or other kinds of problems
some individuals with this condition develop. Each situation is different.
The one child I have worked with who has hydrocephaly has been an
interesting and rewarding little person to know.
