I just searched the archives and didn't find many posts on Hirschsprung
Disease and I think I'm spelling it correctly. A worried mother of a 4
month old called (she lives 1700 miles away in my old hometown). Her baby
boy has only pooped on his own, three times in the last six weeks. She has
been told to try karo, introduce solids, and use suppositories to encourage
bowel movements. Dr. suspects Hirschsprung Disease and told her not to
breastfeed baby for 24 hours before scheduled Barium enema. She of course
is very concerned how they'll deal for 24 hours with nothing but water when
this baby has never had a bottle. When I read archives I did find an
interesting post by Kathleen Bruce re allowing anything but breastmilk
(coke and apple juice were listed) after the procedure but no comments
about before.

Can baby with Hirschsprung, really wait until 4 months to be diagnosed?
Could this be something else? Too much iron? Baby had regular poops for
first couple months. I'm confused if they suspect Hirschsprung, why start
solids earlier than mom wanted to...wouldn't breastmilk be safer?

I guess I am interested if anyone else has worked with a baby with
Hirschsprung and how breastfeeding was handled.
