"I think that the popular perception that babies are *supposed* to be eating
from pre-packaged jars (after all, doesn't the label say "Baby Food"?)
leaves
many moms not even thinking that there are other ways of making food
suitable
for a baby. "
Exactly!
My husband and I did something that was easy, free and always available
regardless of where we went or what we ate. We pre-chewed my son's food.
No jars, no grinder, no spoons. We chewed it up and put it in his mouth. He
pointed and reached for the foods on our plates and we prepared them a
la table in our mouths. We travelled lightly and never hesitated to go out
with Angus (son) in tow.
The dominant world culture of consumption leads us to believe that we must
be consumers in everything we do from birth to bottles to feeding equipment,
there will always be things to buy.
Here on Ponpei (4th world) I am constantly reminded and amazed at how human
beings can make do very simply and very nicely with very few consumable
products.
