An article in today's Medical Observer ( a magazine for general
practitioners in Australia) has a large article devoted to osteoporosis and
pregnancy. It states that women who develop osteoporosis in pregnancy
should not breastfeed. It also states that calcium supplements should be
avoided in pregnancy because of the risk of renal stones but given in the
breastfeeding woman. Of course this whole article will be interpreted by
most readers as implying that breastfeeding is bad for your bones. There is
a large photograph accompanying the article of a baby being bottlefed. I
plan to write a response but would appreciate comments from other
Lactnetters.
