Jan - When I first began as an LLL leader (24 years) we often suggested
to mothers that they just get into bed and nurse and nurse. Then I took
and passed the exam and started trying to teach myself how to be a little
more defensive (sad to say) and also more proactive. The baby that I
wrote about yesterday had lost a full 7% by discharge at 36 hours. When
I saw him in the afternoon he had had no urine for over 8 hours. Before
I left (after some BMS) he had urinated BUT just after that he crashed
and was stuporous, lethargic and unresponsive. Due to a fortuitous set
of circumstances hospitalization was averted (there was a PNP and a
family practice MD in the house at the time- and he perked up). I am now
just a tad more respectful of early dehydration- and very glad that I
suggested that the baby did need BMS. I am also very upset that the
hospital seems to have been unable to asses if any milk transfer was
taking place.
