>Isn't that what SPAM is? Chanita, San Francisco

No, Chanita, potted meat is not Spam. One of my grandmothers used to serve
us potted meat and we thought it was such a treat! In our grocery stores it
is in a tiny can and has solid fat congealed on top of finely ground meat
"substances." Whereas Spam is in that recognizable elipse-shaped can which
used to have a key to open it. It is solid and can be sliced.

I know that if I encountered potted meat I would feel warm all over as if my
dear gramma was again treating me to something grand. Those comfort foods
with such memories are always in there I suppose, even after our nutrition
education has gone on to greater heights.

I once had a party with friends who were asked to bring their favorite
comfort foods of their pasts, particularly those that they would NEVER serve
to their own families or admit that they had ever experienced. What a spread!
