Hi All,
Just an interesting little tidbit from the homefront. Had to take PJ in for
his WIC physical last week. He weighs 22 pounds and is almost 29 in long!
He's quite a cutie, running all over the place...anyway, I digress a bit.
THe thing was that the Dr was surprised at PJs hematocrit levels. Asked me
if I was giving him supplemental iron (NO!), how much solid food was he
eating (not a heck of a lot, sometimes none for a few days at a time,
certainly no meals to replace a BF). I asked him why, was PJ's iron level
too low? No, he said. It was excellant! With 34% being the borderline for
the hematocrit, PJ had a 38%!
Now, who says that BF babies are anemic and must have supplemental iron? I
remember Ben always being just below the borderline of the hematocrit and I
think I know why. We were always feeding him iron fortified baby cereals as
per Dr's orders. (I know, now I know better, and look at the results!) I
wish that there could be some major study done to prove that giving BF
babies supplemental iron messes with their natural iron intake from mother's
milk. Is there one?
Hugs to all!
