Dear All
I am working with a motivated mother of premie twins born at 33 weeks
gestation, currently in the NICU. The girl weighs 4.5 lb, the boy 3.5 lb. I
helped Mom put the baby to breast on day one; infant suckled weakly, but
did suckle, not just lick. Mom and Dad are kangarooing both twins. Boy twin
is not yet being fed by mouth.
As you guys may remember I am a volunteer at this hospital but there is no
other BF specialist there so I get even these kinds of cases, which I am
not necessarily 'certified' to manage.... anyway.... a couple of questions....
Does Mom need to pump literally twice as much from now to build up her milk
supply for twins? Like, every 1.5 hours? Or can she pump every 2 to 3
hours, supplying as much EBM for babies as possible, and then build up
supply as the twins need more and nurse directly? I presume the girl, who
is far healthier at present than the boy, will be discharged some time
before he is, maybe even quite soon. Presumably Mom will need to nurse the
girl then pump between feeds to collect milk for and build up supply for
the boy. Yes? No? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Anne Merewood
