There is a study on health benefits, I think, that shows that being BF by
smoking mom is better than being bottle-fed by smoking mom. But I don't
have that one.

1.Vio, F., Salazar, G. & Infante, C. (1991). Smoking during pregnancy and
lactation and its effects on breast-milk volume.
Am J of Clinical Nutrition, 54:1011-16.

Decreased milk volume leading to lower weight gains.

2.Stepans, M>B>F and Wilkerson, N. (1993). Physiologic effects of maternal
smoking on breast-feeding infants. J. of Am. Nurse Practitioners, 5(3),
105-113.

Nicotine in milk, infants of smoking moms had decreased O2 sat and
significant changes in respirations.

3.Matheson, I. (1989). letter to editor, The effects of smoking on
lactation and infantile colic. JAMA 261 (1), Jan.6, 1989. (Sorry don't
have page #)

Decreased milk supply mom-reported. Increased # of babies with colic.

4.Hopkinson, J. M., Schanler, R.J., Fraley, J. K., and Garza, C. (1992).
Milk production by mothers of premature infants: Influence of cigarette
smoking. Pediatrics 90(6), 934-938.

Less fat and less volume.

Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
