Anne,

Sounds like this baby is getting too much too quickly or too little too
slowly at some feeds, gets frustrated or uncomfortable and comes off.
Would look into MER. Or could be birth injury is making baby very
uncomfortable in some positions - keeping a log of nursings for a day or
two could be useful in helping to pinpoint this - when baby is pulling
off, try finger-feeding in the exact same position, as near as possible,
and see if the baby is uncomfortable finger-feeding as well. Or try using
a nipple shield - if baby wil nurse with shield, does this eliminate
positioning as a problem? Although forcing a baby to take only the breast
does occasionally work, it is usually an exercise in extreme frustration,
leading sometimes to an almost hysterical mother and baby - I don't
usually recommend this approach. Good luck with this. These on-again,
off-again latchers can be so frustrating to work with. However, with
patience, most do eventually settle down and nurse well.
