I am giving a presentation that will, among other things, address
maternal substance abuse and breastfeeding. I want to address Zyban
which is being prescribed as a smoking cessation aid. I can find that
it's generic name is "bupropion HCl" but cannot seem to find how that
differs from "bupropion". Are they the same? If so, is Wellbutrin the
same as Zyban or do they only contain the same active ingredient?

Hale 97 lists Wellbutrin as "bupropion" (no HCl). The Glaxo-Wellcome
page on Zyban says "You should not take ZYBAN if you have a seizure
disorder; are already taking WELLBUTRINŽ, WELLBUTRIN SRŽ, or any other
medicines that contain bupropion HCl."

I've also searched the archives and checked the 96 USPDI.

Thanks!
Kathy
