Any Israelis out there members of the Maccabi Health Fund? On page 21 of
the winter 1998 edition of the Maccabiton, there is an article on calcium
supplements during breastfeeding under the "New studies" section. The
source was listed as the New England Journal of Medicine, with no date of
publication, no author. When I looked it up in Medline, I came up with
nothing on calcium in that journal in the past year.

They present this study in a way that may have women going out and taking
many calcium supps, and aside from that the article mentions there being
more calcium density in the bone structure after return of menses (throw
out LAM on that one).

Most disturbing however was the following sentence:

"During the weaning stage, *specifically about 5 months after birth*, there
is a greater need for calcium in the diet." (stress mine)

Isn't this in direct contradiction to the Ministry of Health that now
recommends *total breastfeeding* for at least *SIX* months? Dr. Deena, are
you there? What do you think?

Nofia
