Not only was the optometrist's action inappropriate and just plain bad
manners, it was also unprofessional in the extreme.  I think her
behaviour could be call professional misconduct.  The mother might
consider lodging a complaint with the licensing board of optometrists.
Whatever our feelings about a particular patient, we have no right to
deny them treatment they need once we have accepted them as patients.
