Dear Annelies,
I first became a doctor, and then had children and became interested in BF.
Studying medicine is a long and not always easy process, especialy as a
mother of children - in fact it should be very hard with 3 children.
I am a doctor, and I can prescribe any antibiotic I think fit, I think I
know most of the right advice to give breastfeeding mothers - but I still
see LOTS of frustrating situations - other docs giving unbelievable wrong
advice, mothers weaning for all the wrong reasons, hospitals terribly
UN-baby-friendly and so on. It is often very difficult to try to tell other
doctors where they are mistaken - many won't listen, and some get really
unpleasant...
It is of course easier as an MD in some situations, but often I don't have
the time to do real bf counseling, and I would love to have a good LC around.
I don't think it would be worthwhile to become a doctor just to support bf.
Of course I love my work and there are many good reasons to become a
doctor, but it's a long road...
If you have any more questiones I will be happy to help.
