So much of what childbirth educators and lactation consultants do is done to
help women overcome, or at least cope with, the challenges of policy,
procedure, routines, and technology, that many women will face before, during,
and after childbirth. What will we do when all this gets fixed? Until then, we
fix the boo-boos (sometimes by using yet more technology like pumps). May be
an immediate gratification thing, certainly is a deep concern for the mothers
and babies we see everyday. I will be better able to see the forest more
clearly when the trees are a little less dense and there are a few less brush
fires to put out. The AAP just did some thinning. And we all helped.
