Tincture of Benzoin (Friar's Balsam)

In reply to the case of sticking to nightgown

I guess we can all quote from cases which are the result of very poor
practice. Blaming the Tincture when it was a case of whoever applied it
being
unaware of how of the procedure in applying the tincture and also possibly
a case of more is better may be the issue here. Allowing to air dry and
wear off rather than wash off may have been a better solution to active
removal. fresh Tincture would taste bad but sealed and dried the babies do
not object and seem unperturbed by its presence attaching and feeding well
as the mother relaxes.

As Maureen Minchin said it should only be applied to the fissure and not
to the good tissue.

Due to improved education and the "Message" of positioning and attachment
the incidence of cracks appears to be reducing at least anecdotal. I have
seen Tincture of benzoin work when correctly applied and it only needs one
or two applications.

I am seeing women more about "crying babies" and "not enough milk" at
about
11-12 weeks. Advice from maternal and child health nurses about giving
solids at this early time is still occurring. Women seem to respond when
advised about "cluster" feeds and 3 monthly growth spurts ie increased
demand for breastfeeding on a l hourly basis around the late afternoon.
