How can anyone think a pump is EASIER or more
>convenient than hand expression?

I haven't had to express more than oocasionally, but for me personally, a
pump is definately more convenient and easier. I don't have to try to
manipulate my breast and hold a bottle or cup at the same time and tyr to
keep them aligned so I don't end up with milk in my lap. When using the
pump the milk is certainly going to end up in the bottle where I want it,
and when I used my battery/electric pump it only takes one hand. This
allows me to do other things, namely nurse my baby on my other breast, I
can't imagine how this would be done with hand expression. I have tried
hand expression several times and I just can't get the hang of it. I think
it is just one of those things some women can learn to do well and others
not so much, kind of like braiding hair, I've tried for years but it never
looks right, my sister can do a pro job in a minute flat.

Just as an aside, I don't know any moms that are bottle feeding that do all
but the last step you mentioned and many aren't even doing that. Most
dishwashwer the bottles, no sterilizing, and use tap or bottled water. For
those using the ready to feed all it takes is that can opener. My sister
even took it a step further to never warm the bottles and start her babies
(3 never breastfed) on cold formula from the beginning. I totally agree
breastfeeding is easier, but formula feeding isn't as involved as it used
to be, for some moms anyway.
and Katherine if you are dense, well then I'm just a total idiot. :)
