Re :Droperidol(Inapsine)
I must concur with my esteemed colleague Dr. Newman concerning breastfeeding
following the use of droperidol.
Droperidol is a potent neuroleptic used in conjunction with anesthesia.
However, it has a brief 2.2 hour elimination half-life. Although we do not
have published breast milk levels, the peak plasma levels following IM
injection at 1 hour, is only 60 ng/ml. Assuming a Milk:Plasma ratio of one
(which is theoretical and probably high) an infant ingesting 1000 cc of milk
per day would only ingest 60 micrograms of droperidol, an amount so low it
would be clinically irrelevant.
Droperidol can be used in children down to 2 years of age in doses of 1.5
milligrams(1500 micrograms) per 20 lbs of weight.
If the mom wanted to be absolutely safe, she could discontinue breastfeeding
for several hours to 10 hours, but as with Dr. Newman, I believe this is
largely unnecessary.
