dear all,

I keep seeing it said in the mastitis discussion that "antibiotics work by
reducing inflammation," which I have never heard before, pardon my ignorance
(white blood cells, edema, etc.?). Is this strictly correct, and if so, why
DON'T we get ibuprofen for everything instead of antibiotics, or, commonly,
the two in combination?

Catching up with Lactnets, I wish to mention a very useful document I have
which discusses treatment of the "yeasty beasties." It is Unit 18 of the
"Lactation Consultant Series," "Candidiasis and Breastfeeding," "Developed by
the Lactation Specialists Education Department of La Leche League," Editor,
Beverly Rae, M.S.W., C.S.W., I.B.C.L.C. I find it very useful for these
recurring cases because it has a long discussion of "household management"
steps to take. It also has a patient questionnaire. I have not reviewed all
of it recently, but two other ideas that might help include, treating all
members of the family, and doing some lab work to determine exactly which
organism is the cause of the problem. There is so much of this here in
Colorado, and I have a speculative theory about the general alkalinity of the
physical climate being the cause.

A personal note on pertussis: I was told over a year back that there was a
lot of pertussis at the private school in a nearby town that is connected to
the school my children then went to. When my son had coughed for weeks on
end, I insisted that my HCP test for pertussis, because I was aware that one
can get it even when vaccinnated. I had to insist, because I was told that
"no one gets it anymore that is vaccinnated," and "the test is expensive and
unreliable anyway." It's a sad day when the brave young HCP who insists that
"insurance will not dictate my practices," succumbs.

AOL now provides downloads that I can actually access and read, but I noticed
that the reason several digests are sent as downloaded files is that include
a complete previous digest within them! Anybody have a clue or the similar
experience? I am just grateful to be able to read the darn things.
