I believe that the question of bf causing early miscarriage may be a
little different than whether bf can bring on labor in a mother with a
history of premature births. We know that there is no evidence that the
hormonal influence of oxytocin can precipitate a miscarriage early in
pregnancy. However, as the pregnancy progresses, I would guess that at
some point, probably different for each woman, this influence would start
to come into play. (BTW, I nursed all the way through my second pregancy
with no problems, except for very sore nipples). For the average woman,
this would not be a factor until the end of pregnancy when it wouldn't
matter anyways - in fact, breast pumps/sexual play are used in some OB
practices to initiate labor in those who are at term. However, it is not
beyond the realm of possibility that some moms will show this sensitivity
earlier in pregnancy at a time when it is not yet desirable. We just
don't know enough yet about all of the causes of premature birth. But I
would not be comfortable telling a woman with this history that there is
absolutely no chance that bf would have this effect on her. The unborn
child's health must also be considered. I have no references for any of
this, just my own humble opinion.
