Welcome Siemian,
Has this mother tried a steroid ointment on the nipple area? If this is
eczema she will see a big improvement with a very small amount of a strong
steroid, like diprosone, 3 times a day (after feeds). If the area is weepy,
it may be infected with bacteria, so the Bactroban ointment can be used 2
or 3 times a day as well. She should see an improvement in a few days, and
should not continue a strong steroid for more than 7 days (unless under her
doctor's advice).
I wrote a case study of nipple eczema in the Journal of Human Lactation,
Sept 1993, Vol 9: 173-175 (If you don't have access to this, let me know).
