Some of you may remember my mentioning a mom who had no nipples. After
working with her for weeks, I began to wonder if perhaps I was missing
something in the baby's suck because I was so focused on mom's areola with
ductal openings. She had a sister who was nursing so I proposed that we see
what baby would do with Auntie's breasts. Mom liked the idea.
Baby latched on like a pro. I looked at Mom and asked, "How do you feel
about that." She replied, "I am a stubborn woman. If he can feed from her,
he will feed from me." It was several weeks beyond that, but he did, in
fact, feed from his mom for a long time. After this "test" we were both
assured that the problem wasn't with his oral function.
