Just typing the subject line for this post is enough to make me
mad...but, just because I disagree with the idea of making a child sleep
through the night using his methods doesn't mean it isn't for
someone..somewhere. And, I do speak form vast experience of a child (the
second of my three) who refused to sleep through the night until nearly
three...YEARS! It took what I call an attitude readjustment on MY part
to handle his needs. I saw it (along with his entire high needs
personality) as his way of trying to communicate his needs to me.
Admittedly, at times I literally had to tell myself he wasn't being mean,
but that he wasn't able to articulate his needs in words.
Regardless of my own story, I did see a preview for "Mad About You" for
this Tuesday evening (Dec. 16). It is promo-ed as a show with no
commercials addressing the baby who won't sleep at night. The previews
showed the leads (Jamie and Paul) sitting outside the bedroom door of the
baby, hearing the baby scream. The husband asks the wife something like,
"what do your instincts tell you?" She replies "to go in and get her
(the baby)."
While I don't say TV is reality, it will be interesting to see
how the network handles a baby not sleeping through the night.
Unfortunately, sometimes people make real-life decisions based on the
television. I hope the writers did not choose the Ferber method...
