At one of the breastfeeding classes ( 48 hours plus clinical time , for
professionals) my students have to present projects to the class. One
group collected all the lotions and potions used on mothers' nipples,
and all the references they could find discussing them. They
were able to find at least fifteen different items, including tincture of
benzoin and also fiar's balsam. As part of the presentation, everyone
in the class tasted each item. A very good lesson in what NOT to apply
to nipples. Eileen Shea, BSc, IBCLC
