I've become very concerned recently about the problem of antibiotic use
in childbirth, particularly as it relates toe the beta strep positive
moms.  In my birth center the protocol is to use penicillin, if the mom
is not allergic, every four hours.  This usually means one or two doses,
enough to knock down the bugs but not knock them out.  I've seen a
couple of babies recently with yeast which I suspect comes from this
practice, but I'm more concerned about what wonderful resistant bacteria
we're developing with these small doses of antibiotics.

It will be interesting to see what happens a few more years down the
road.
