Retained placenta, if a large piece, will show up on ultra sound.  Also the
mom will probably have sx like too much bleeding, not progressing from
rubra to serosa to alba, unusual amt of cramping (body trying to get rid of
placenta).  A D & C will solve this very rapidly and lactogenesis begins
like it's day 1.  At least that's my experience.  Pat in SNJ
