Metronidazole is *not* contraindicated for nursing mothers. The
Compendium of Pharmaceutical Specialities (Canadian PDR) states
exactly that. If you want a copy of the section on drugs and
breastfeeding please send me your regular mailing address and I will
send it.

Fluconazole now has a formulation for infants for the treatment of
*uncomplicated* thrush. Helllllo!!!--if it is okay to give it to
normal infants for the treatment of thrush, there is *no*
contraindication to using it in nursing mothers.

Do not forget, the question remains: Does the tiny amount of the drug
added to breastmilk make breastmilk more hazardous than artificial
feeding? The answer is almost never "yes". Find a physician who is
open minded and supportive of breastfeeding and refer all your
patients to him/her.
