I currently have senior nursing students rotating through our lactation
center. Each spends 2 afternoons a week during their OB rotation which is
only 4 weeks total. The feedback from the students has been great. They
learn alot ..as much as I can teach them and the nice thing is it is one to
one, in a very relaxed, open atmosphere.
The student, with the clients consent, can accompany me on a home consult or
sit in on a office consult. The student is also there an afternoon that we
have a mothers and babies group . So needless to say, they see alot of
breastfeeding at all different ages and obtain feedback and information from
the mothers themselves. And let's face it....there is no better teaching aid
than these experienced breastfeeding mothers and babies !
I know the impact is a drop in the bucket compared to what needs to be done
but it's a nice start and I'm happy to be a part of it.
