Debi: Unless this mom has been fastidious about elimination diet of cmp
and soy for a month, there is no reason to take baby off breastmilk with
the vague diagnosis that this doc has presented. Remember that even once
the offending foods have been removed from the diet, it takes time to fully
clear both the mom and then the baby's body AND then it takes time for the
fissures to heal.
A much better solution (IMHO) is for this doc to consider giving oral
cromolyn to the baby. This will help mediate the allergic response and
give the intestines a chance to heal. It is possible that it is something
else in the mom's diet; if that is the case, the cromolyn will help that
too.
Lastly, is there any history of antibiotic or steriod use in pregnancy or
postpartum? This could also be related to yeast overgrowth in the
intestines (think of how inflamed mouths, breasts, and vagina's get with
massive yeast--and they bleed when rubbed).
