I tried posting this to the list a few days ago, but have had no responses,
and since then there has been another occurence. Here is the story/question:
This Mom's twins are 14 days old, 7# 14 (baby #1) and 6# 14 (baby #2), 40
weeks gestation (!). The first night in the hospital Mom was nursing baby
#1, who was dozing or asleep at the breast, and he started to gasp for air
and gag, and then turned blue. Mom used an aspirator to suction his mouth,
removed some colorless "spit", and baby started breathing again. Baby #2 did
the exact same thing later that night. Pediatrician was present when the
second baby did it, and said not to worry, that she should just pat his back,
suction him, and he (they) would be fine. Baby # 2 had a second occurence in
the hospital, and then another three nights ago, then again last night. The
Mom had been nursing him while asleep (both Mom and baby), and woke to find
baby blue and gasping. Mom suctioned him, and found phlegm once again.
Right after that, baby spit up about a tablespoon of yellow matter that she
said resembled curdled milk.
This Mom is completely dedicated to nursing, and is searching for some
answers as to what may be going on. Any thoughts you all might have would be
greatly appreciated.
