Avocado? Granola bars? Don't think so. I've been to Eastern Europe
a number of times and from what I've seen, the diet is cholesterol
city... mostly sausages, fatty meats (pork, beef and duck), bread
and potatoes. Coming from Israel where we buy fruit/veg by the kls., we
were surprised to see shoppers buying 1 pear or 2 bananas. In the
winter, fresh fruit and vegetables are a luxury few can afford. In some
countries like the Czech Republic and Hungary, the situation is
improving, but in others like Romania and Bulgaria, it's pretty bad. I
would get whatever I could for this mother and send her vitamins. She
will probably be able to get the calories from what's locally available,
but will need the vitamins, esp. C.
