Just wanted to respond to the entry about the Bradley method of prepared
childbirth. This methodis presented in the book "The Six Methods of
Childbirth" by Constance Bean that many LLL group libraries have. The
Bradley Method is presented along with Lamaze and the Grantly Dick-Read
method and others. I didn't realize until after I read the book, that I
learned the Lamaze method in classes for my first child and Bradley with my
second. Both were just called "prepared childbirth" when we signed up. I
must say, Bradley definately worked better for me, and now as a labor and
delivery nurse, it is what I encourage patients to use. The difference is
that Bradley teaches you to focus on what is going on in your body during
labor and to use imagery (the flower opening up idea) as opposed to Lamaze
where you focus on something external, which during the intense experience of
labor amounts to self-hynosis{I'm not good at that. How about you?!})
Bradley seems to me to encourage the laboring woman to work in sync with her
body rather than try to pretend it isn't happening.
It sounds like the attitude of this woman was at fault not her
childbirth method. For all of us current and former LLLers, we can
appreciate taking the blame for the strong opinions and inflexible attitudes
of some of our members. Hope this helps.
