Kathleen - your dilemma sounding loud and clear across cyberspace.  I think
you did the right thing!  Rule # 1, feed the baby (if that requires a
shield, never mind!).  Once the baby is eating well, and mom's breasts are
draining, then you can try slooowly weaning off the shield.  Keep us posted!
