I would like to add two comments. One that weaning age is part of
the public breastfeeding discussion. Often the problem is identified as
public breastfeeding when it is really breastfeeding a child beyond the
first few weeks. Second a discussion of weaning age is an essential addition
to prenatal breastfeeding classes. I always refuse to give a 'recommended'
age saying it is up to the parents and child but I ALWAYS bring up Kathy D's
information, saying research suggests weaning age should range from 2.5 to
up to 9 (pause for effect) years. When they have picked themselves up off
the floor, we usually have a lovely discussion and in this community names
will be named and families who have breastfeeding children will be
mentioned. I end the discussion by saying I am not telling them how long to
breastfeed, just asking that they make the decision as they go along and do
not judge those who choose to breastfeed beyond infancy. Breastfeeding
toddlers are common here, it is the preschoolers that create discussion.
I feel quite strongly that the question should be addressed up front
by the people best able to handle discussion. Don't leave it to some poor
mom with a crying child.
