I wish I had known some of this stuff when I was nursing my 2nd one, now 23
yr old. I had extremely sore nipples (to the point of tears every feed)
for 6 wks, and couldn't stand to nurse past a couple minutes after the MER
slowed. In hindsight, I KNOW I had a yeast infection, but no one knew of
such things then. Consequently, she was a very fussy baby who wouldn't ever
nurse to sleep and pulled and kneaded the breast like a cat and pinched
constantly - also gained weight slowly until solids at 4 mo. I finally had
to swaddle her for every feeding, as she would pinch the skin of my breast
and roll it between her fingers - drove me wild!
She weaned to a cup at 10 1/2 mo, and I was ready. I went on and easily
nursed my 3rd child for 27 mo - never had this problem.
Of all the things in life I would do over, I would have given anything to
redo nursing Kari, with everything I know now, and have good memories
instead of all that pain. I always say it was a good thing she was a
planned, much wanted baby or I would have given her away. She is such a
sweety now, and her 2nd child weaned recently at 17 mo. So I guess I must
have done something right.
