Due to an interesting series of events at my institution a luncheon
entitled "A dialogue on Breasfeeding" has been scheduled for November
4th. This is to be an informal open forum with the pediatricians, OBs,
nurse manager of my unit, myself(as the staff nurse/LC) and
representation from administration. I feel this is a golden opportunity
to share updated information and would love any suggestions on what
specifically to include. I am an IBCLC as of this year and the
lactation program I have initiated is only 9 months old. My nursing
staff has been wonderfully supportive and eager to learn but the medical
staff has been very resistant.
Specific issues I am facing are "mandatory" first water per bottle,
all supplemetary feeds are to be per bottle nipple, separation of infant
and mom, infants NPO for first 4 hours of life, high medical interventions
during labor and delivery, inconsistent info given....etc...I am feeling
overwhelmed by the task before me and would love your input.
Thanks. Michelle Williams RN BSN IBCLC
