You should come here! 100% Hispanics! You could try out methods to your
heart's content - we have 2 - 3 a day. Don;t know what the reason, but my
only quick fix (remember we have 24 hour stays and moms who want me to fix
it now or they'll go to bottles) is the large medela nipple shield. Just
used one today and baby went to breast after using a shield three times.
Nurses had tried all day to get baby to suck (skin to skin, baby on top,
finger massage of tongue, teasing lower lip and even sticking out the
tongue to the baby to see if he'd imitate - he would, then go back and suck
the tongue and lower lip in with the breast). I tried the football hold
and using my index finger to keep the lower lip down, as well as the usual
"put the baby with nose to nipple to have him reach" and "tease lower lip
to have him open wide". The situation now was either give the baby breast
or use finger, bottle or syringe feeding. Mom wanted bottle. So - I used
the shield for both breasts on one feed, one breast on the second feed, and
by the second breast baby was using his tongue correctly. (Left work at
10:00 pm thanks to that one!) I only hope things continue OK as the
weekend is upon us.
