Hello Lactnetters,
A mom visited with me about her OB's order to stop BF her 14 month
old because she just found out she is in very early pregnancy. Her 1st 3
pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Her only child has had a wonderful BF
experience, and has been gradually weaning himself until he now only nurses
about 2-3 times in 24 hours, but her Dr. insists that he is not taking any
chances and wants her to wean. I reviewed with her the information from BF
Answer Book, and Dr. Lawrence's book, but also told her I would ask you on
the Lactnet line if you have any other information. I helped this mother
explore her feelings and consider if she wants a 2nd opinion, and what if
she decides to continue BF and something does happen to this pregnancy - how
would she feel etc. etc. As I pointed out to her BF was not an issue with
the 1st 3 pregnancies, but that this kind of decision had to be made by her
with the support of her spouse and hopefully with her Dr.'s support. This
mom also admitted that it may be more stressful for her to deal with an
upset toddler in the middle of the night, trying to deny him a few minutes
of BF than it would be to just continue not offering, but not denying him.
Thanks for any other ideas.
