Thanks to all who provided suggestions re: my mom with constipated baby.
I met with her Monday (my usual "Lactation day" at the hospital). She
actually has many issues, baby's constipation was the catalyst for
seeking support but does not appear to be the problem she initially
indicated it was. Stooling pattern has changed but consistancy, amount,
and color all normal. She is back to exclusively breastfeeding, is not
ging to do any more enemas on baby (thanks Jonathan, I shared your
observation with her and she was appropriately sobered), and agrees that
her diet needs adjusting (for her own sake as well as baby's). I did
examine baby briefly and she appears healthy, alert and happy. Mom is
another story; single parent with little family support or social
contact. Gave her the phone #s for LLL and local Mom's club with
encouragement to contact them. Also gave her good data on vegetarian
eating from our hospital's very helpful dietician (a pregnant mom who
breastfeeds). People like her make my job so much easier.
Patricia, I'll take you up on the offer for assist with accessing the
archives. (Sent this message to your e-mail address but don't know if it
made it; am new to this computer stuff and accidently sent the first
message to listserv--oops.) Besides the info on starting solids, I am
interested in learning about this "Breast compression" technique so many
peole have referred to. Have tried several times (using lactnet
directions) and thus far been unsuccessful. Judging by the wealth of
information so far encountered on Lactnet, I can only imagine how much
more I can learn through the archives. Will be taking the certification
exam next year so need all the help I can get.
Warm thanks,Mary Anne B.
