Hi All
I feel that one of the reasons that people 'ooh and aah' over
animals nursing and are 'grossed out' when humans are nursing is that
they are equating breastfeeding with humans, lowering themselves to the
level of animals. The word natural equates to ancient, animalistic and
barbaric - not as nature intended. This is one reason that I feel we see
the acceptence of so many 'scientific advances' in the
conception/pregnancy area. They are seen as removing the natural and
taking us away from 'just being another animal.' If two or three
generations of just our society being so intensely torn away from
breastfeeding, it worries me as to what the future holds.
In my classes and work with moms, I stress that one of their options
is to ask the HCP if there is another medication option to consider.
They need to explain to the HCP how important breastfeeding is and that
they feel interuptions and interventions should be kept to a minimum,
unless medically necessary. I find that most HCPs realize that mom is
committed if they either voice their feelings or even question the HCP,
and the HCP will usually make the attempt to work through the situation.
But I agree, why does it seem that at the first hint of a problem or
conflict, breastfeeding is the first to be suspected, accused and
recommended to go?
